Southern Arizona has a wide assortment of photogenic churches. Some are historic and built long ago, some were built to look that way. Here is a church from the movies, the Crooked Creek Chapel at Old Tucson Studios.

648 N Stone Ave, Tucson, AZ Apr 6, 2008 — This art deco gas station has been around for a while. I’ve seen two building dates 1924, and the 1930s. I don’t know which one is right. I do know that in the 60s it was a Shell Station, in the 70s it was a Union Gas Station. It appeared in the 1980s movie release “Stir Crazy.” The station was one of the first in Tucson back when Stone Avenue was a main road.
Today it’s a great place to buy Allstate Insurance!

I imported and tagged the photo with Photo Mechanic. I used Adobe Lightroom for adding color profiles, basic adjustments, and exporting jpgs/tiffs from the raw to simulate HDR. I used Photomatix to tone-map the images into an HDR image. I spruced-up the image using the Topaz plug-ins: Denoise, Detail, Adjust, and Remask then touched-up the image using Adobe Photoshop. The black and white image was created by using the Adobe Photoshop black and white filter. The Sepia toning was accomplished with a #85 Photo filter in Photoshop.

Flower Magic by Jim Purcell The terms tropical and desert just don’t seem to go together. But Tucson rewrites all the rules. The Tucson Botanical Gardens has Arizona’s only tropical butterfly exhibit called Butterfly Magic. I consider this place flower magic as well. Since the temperatures are always nice and steamy, and the humidity is [...]

Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Tucson, AZ Dec 27, 2006 — The Harris Hawk is a very interesting bird. First of all this raptor hunts in packs unlike most raptors. Second, the females are generally about 35% larger than the males. This photo is interesting in that because the birds hunt in groups on occasion when a [...]
Cotton Picken’ Cotton Field by Jim Purcell You may not think of Arizona and agriculture in the same sentance, but you should. We have over 700,000 acres of field crops. Apples, alfalfa, beans, beets, broccoli, over 20 different crops are grown. Cattle, horses, and all the usual animals are raised along with the unusual. And [...]
The Apse and Altar inside the San Xavier del Bac Mission by Jim Purcell Tohono Óodom Nation, Tucson, AZ Sep 9, 2006 — An Apse is an architecture term for a semi circular recess covered with a hemispherical semi dome. I am not making this up! So, the altar is located in the apse. [...]
